Thailand is popular for so many things like Spa, Massages, Buddhist Temples etc but one thing that really stands out is its Censorship which is among the most hardest in the world. So many production houses have been involved in Tussles with its Censorship Board over the years. But enter Narcos Mexico which changed the game. It used the Censorship as a way to promote its Content. But how ? The Streisand Effect.


What is the Streisand Effect ?

The Streisand Effect is a phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide, remove or censor a piece of information has the unintended consequences of publicizing the information more widely. Increasingly prevalent in the internet age, when people become aware that information is being kept from them, their motivation to access and spread it increases.


How did Narcos Mexico use it ?

Narcos Mexico is full of sex, drugs and violence. So, in this remarkable effort, they let censorship promote it for them. By complying with the law completely and removing the most provocative content from the advertising, they drew more attention to it than ever before. The result was that the Censor cut of Narcos achieved 93 million impressions and reached 34 million people, which is almost half of Thailand's population.


Has this effect been observed before ?

Yes. In 2003, Barbra Streisand’s attempt to restrict online views of her residence on a public website had the paradoxical effect of leading to many more views than if she had done nothing and this paradox is since called the Streisand Effect. After that, a lot of other events blew out of proportion because of this effect such as Beyonce's unflattering pictures in Superbowl getting viral, Tom Cruise's video of him talking about his religion gaining more traction than it would have had no action been taken by The Church of Scientology not taken and action and so many more. Narcos Mexico particularly stands out in this list because it has been crafted perfectly to spike interest which it so effortlessly did.
